State Champions Crowned in OHSAA Tournament

The Ohio High School Athletic Association held the annual state tournament last month. The Boys Division II Championship was held at the North Star Golf Club in Sunbury, but the remaining Divisions, Boys I and III, plus both Girls Divisions, were held on the Scarlet and Gray courses at the Ohio State University Golf Course.

 

Boys Division II

Columbus Academy won the top honors in Boys Division II posting a team score of +20. Chardon Notre Dave Cathedral Latin collected runner-up, with Kettering Archbishop Alter securing the third spot.

This was the second consecutive year Chardon NDCL took home runner-up honors. They set a boys Division II NorthStar state record on Friday with a single-round team score of 297, but were overtaken by Columbus Academy’s 295 on Saturday.

Charlie Toman of Chardon fired a two-day total of 66-71 =137, seven-under-par to take home the Division II Boys Trophy. Mason Witt from Jamestown Greeneview finished four shots back for runner-up and Trent Tipton from Columbus Bishop Hartley was third.

 

Girls Division II

The Girls Division II was competed on the Gray Course at the Ohio State University Golf Club. Independence High School, from the Cleveland, area won with Shelby High School taking runner-up and Lima Central Catholic taking the third spot.

The Independence women’s team set a Division II state championship record with a score of 320-332-652, beating the previous record by six strokes.

In the Individual competition, Sarah Willis from Eaton fired 72-67 = 139, one-under-par to win. Jill Schmitmeyer, from St. Mary’s Memorial and Sophia Trombetta, from Independence, both posted two-over-par for the two days to tie for runner-up.

 

Boys Division III

Worthington Christian captured its first Boys Division III state championship on the Scarlet Course.

 

They jumped out to a nine-stroke lead after the first round and held on to win over runner-up Gates Mills Gilmour Academy and third-place Strasburg Franklin.

 

Columbiana’s Jared Wilson earned Division III medalist honors, for the second consecutive year. He carded 69-72-141. Wilson has finished top-five in the state tournament for the past three years.

 

Avery Green from South Charleston Southeastern beat Connor Stevens, from Brookfield, by a single stroke to capture runner-up.

 

 

 

Girls Division I

 

Lewis Center Olentangy Orange won the Girls Division I tournament on the Gray Course by ten shots over runner-up Centerville and 11 shots over Toledo St. Ursula.

 

Katie Hallinan of Cincinnati Walnut Hills fired rounds of 68-69=137 for a three-under-par total won the Division I title. Jennifer Wang from Solon finished three shots back for runner-up and Madison Spiess from New Albany was third.

 

Boys Division I

 

Dublin Jerome won the Boys Division I title with scores of 295-312=607 +31. Nine shots back, Powell Olentangy Liberty was runner-up with Green High School capturing third place.

 

In the individual segment, Maxwell Moldovan from Green High School fired two rounds of 76-68=144 to capture the state crown. Trey Rath form Powell Olentangy Liberty and Dublin Jerome’s Blake Solomon tied or runner-up at three-over-par.

 

Congratulations to all of Ohio’s best high school golfers that made it the OHSAA State Tournament this year.
